A world of talent

Globally connected

University of Auckland Waipapa Taumata Rau, is a globally networked institution with a strong commitment to serving and partnering with our local, national, regional and global communities. This external engagement is supported by a range of professional service units that work in tandem with the University’s Faculties, Institutes and Centres to maximise the reach and impact of the University’s teaching and research activities. Oversight for these endeavours is provided by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Strategic Engagement.

Strategic Engagement

International Reach

Located in one of the most diverse cities in the world, the University of Auckland Waipapa Taumata Rau has been internationally oriented since its foundation. Our international outlook underpins our aspiration to be a leading public university of global standing. Our commitment to the Asia-Pacific region, our championing of indigenous knowledge, and the breadth of our research excellence equate to a unique worldview that enhances our research and education and makes us a sought-after partner to the world’s leading universities.

The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s single largest international education institution by value, growing the international student body from 8,500 in 2019 to over 10,000 in 2024, or 22% of the entire student body. The University has ambitious goals for learning abroad for its students, through a combination of semester exchange, language tours, placements and internships, as well as short-term overseas learning opportunities. A particular focus is on improving equitable access to learning abroad for Māori and Pacific students.

We foster strategic partnerships with leading universities across the globe, with a focus on research, student exchanges and related opportunities. We also maintain consistent and intensive engagement with global networks, notably the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU), Universitas 21 (U21), Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) and the International Universities Climate Alliance (IUCA).

Through our Net Zero Carbon Strategy, we are actively exploring approaches to minimise the carbon emissions attributable to internationalisation, while retaining and enhancing the significant benefits that our students receive through international experiences.

International Office

Alumni Relations and Development - Donors, Alumni and Friends

The Alumni Relations and Development (ARD) office is the University’s centralised point of contact for our donors, alumni and friends of the University. The team maintains close relationships with alumni and donors, and hosts both domestic and international events to connect and celebrate them - such as the annual Taumata Awards for distinguished alumni and the Golden Graduates Lunch. ARD also provides gift processing and business intelligence services, as well as governance and investment services to the University’s foundations to support their stewardship and investment of gifts.

The University’s most recent fundraising campaign, “For All Our Futures”, was the most successful philanthropic campaign in New Zealand’s history. The campaign successfully overshot its dual goals of 50% alumni engagement (over 60% achieved) and $300m fundraising ($380m achieved).

Marketing and Recruitment - Taking our University to the World

Marketing and Recruitment is a core enabling function that aspires to accelerate the achievement of the ambitions as set out in Taumata Teitei. We aim to achieve this through a brand positioned in market that serves many communities and shows up as a united ‘One UoA’. Herein, we truly leverage our significant competitive advantage in market, showcasing our stories across teaching, research, innovation, partnerships and engagement, environmental initiatives, and social responsibility.

The Marketing and Recruitment team is responsible for fostering positive relationships with prospective and future students, as well as their schools and parents. The recently refreshed Marketing and Recruitment Strategy positions the University to achieve these goals in an increasingly competitive tertiary education market, with a focus on attracting high quality students looking for world-class education, while also securing the provision of inclusive opportunities to Māori and Pacific students. To this end, the Schools and Community Engagement Team deliver tailored activities that support these priority cohorts to achieve University Entrance. Key elements of the Marketing and Recruitment Strategy are a vibrant brand that serves our institution's diverse communities, an associated brand narrative that tells a compelling story, and the harnessing of technology to create a smooth customer journey.

Communications and Engagement - Talking to the world

The Communications and Engagement team take the lead on strategic communications, articulating the unique contribution that the University of Auckland makes to the world, as well as on engagement partnerships, fostering intentional, meaningful and enduring connections that amplify our impact.

The recently developed Communications and Engagement Strategy recognises the University's crucial role as a trustworthy source of information to the public in an increasingly uncertain world, and emphasises the importance of shared key messages that hone in on the value of our relevant, purposeful and impactful research, scholarship and teaching for our communities. An anchor institution in our community, the University has close and mutually beneficial ties with key stakeholders locally, nationally and globally, including a number of industry partnerships, collaborations with other New Zealand Universities, as well as relationships with local and national government.

Domestic Engagement - Country-wide Connections

New Zealand’s open society enables direct engagement with Government, political parties, civil servants, community groups, NGOs and the business sector. Politicians, diplomats and community leaders are regular visitors to the University. We aim to maintain close connections with Auckland city partners and City Hall, and to be proactive partners in the development of our city and the nation.

The University leads the government-funded North Asia Centre of Asia Pacific Excellence (CAPE), one of three CAPEs nationwide, which promotes cultural and language understanding in schools and the business community. We also host a Confucius Institute, which promotes the learning of Mandarin in the broader Auckland community.
