Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We are seeking either a Technologist or Senior Technologist / MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) to join our team at Grafton Clinical Genomics (GCG), to provide Genomics Service focused on the development and implementation of systems required to deliver high end analyses through research, translational and clinical pathways, such as Next Generation Sequencing and an integrated Laboratory information Management System (LIMS).

Key responsibilities in the roles include:

  • Providing expert input into the development and integration of Genomic Workflows to ISO15189 standards.
  • Operate and manage genomics laboratory equipment and maintain protocols and lab manuals sufficient to meet the standard required.
  • Oversee the integration of a project management system for complex genomic projects and equipment such as high throughput NGS sequencers.
  • Provide specialist training and advice to enable users to access the facility’s research functions, supporting the collection, interpretation and management of complex data.
  • Lead the development of equipment inventory and capability for the facility, providing substantial input to capex proposals and business cases relating to assigned equipment.
  • Provide expert input to research project planning, working with academic stakeholders to co-develop experimental designs to best apply the facility’s capability to the research question.

In the role as a senior Technologist, you will have significant input into operational oversight and management of complex projects and initiatives. You will bring with you a deep knowledge of practical methods and underlying theory in your area of focus, experience, and track record of supporting the complex research and/or clinical operations relevant to your field.

Due to the flexibility of the team dynamics, we are open to either a Technologist or Senior technologist stepping into this vacancy.

This is a fulltime (37.5 hours per week), fixed term (up to 36 months) opportunity.
The remuneration for the Senior Technologist role is $83,300 – $112,700 per annum, dependent on skills and experience.

The remuneration for the Technologist role is $77,101 – $97,400 per annum, dependent on skills and experience.

Mō tō mātou rōpū | About the team

Grafton Clinical Genomics (GCG) is a collaboration between the University of Auckland and Te Toka Tumai, LabPLUS, Auckland City Hospital, as part of the Auckland Academic Health Alliance. We have an IANZ accredited laboratory located in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, University of Auckland. 

He kōrero mōu | About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Scientist in Molecular Genetics, and a current or previous Annual Practicing Certificate.
  • At least 4 years’ experience (post-graduation) in molecular genetics or similar (less accepted if applying for Technologist role)
  • Experience operating high end genomic equipment, including data analysis of outputs.
  • Proven technical skill in multiple genomic applications including NGS work with DNA & RNA.
  • Advanced technical skills in the molecular biology field. (less if applying for the Technologist role)
  • Understanding of molecular biology related databases.
  • Practical understanding of Health and Safety and best practise in related area.
